sicpnl ethical framework
the sicpnl's role towards its membership

In terms of ethics, the SIPNL takes a clear stand on the ethical guidelines surrounding the NLP coaching practice (values, code of ethics, similarities and differences with other coaching approaches). It also has the responsibility to inform its members and the public.

The SIPNL proposes a model code of ethics (which appears in the Certified Coaches' Section) to its members.

Of course, in their professional practices, NLP coaches are at all times respectful of individuals and existing legislation. By no means do coaches ever fail to comply with the requirements of any legislation applying to their working environment.

In Canada, NLP coaches must namely be aware of and comply with the following legislation and regulations: The Privacy Act P-21: Legislation and Regulations and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
Coaches are committed to keeping informed of all requirements respecting their profession and to considering their professional decisions within a philosophy inspired by the highest possible moral and legal ethics principles.

Besides, given our objective to offer high professional standards, we advise our members to have a professional insurance policy. For more information, click here.

The values that govern the SICPNL's strategic decisions are the following:
EXCELLENCE – INTEGRITY – COMMITMENT - INNOVATION

On the ethical level, they can be perceived as follows:

EXCELLENCE

  • NLP coaches thrive to perform as well as they can in coaching situations. To achieve this, they pursue extensive self-work, year after year, thus asserting their personal skills and procedural knowledge year after year.
  • Year after year, they remain up to date and trained in NLP coaching, in order to cultivate their excellence.

INTEGRITY

  • NLP coaches never encourage a client to use their own services at the expense of any other professional. They let clients make their own choices at all times.
  • li>NLP coaches do not accept to work in conditions that might interfere with their professional independence, and especially affect their ability to apply the ethical principles listed here.
  • NLP coaches avoid placing themselves in conflict of interest situations (personal or professional).
  • NLP coaches charge and accept fair, reasonable fees. They must refrain from granting or receiving any unjustified commission, discount or benefit.
  • NLP coaches make sure that their clients clearly understand the steps of the process and the services that NLP coaches can provide them with. NLP coaches must also make sure to explain the expected results of the coaching process realistically.
  • NLP coaches must have a valid contract with their client. This contract includes a description of the services and the conditions thereof, as well as permissions required by any applicable legislation (privacy, authorizations or others).
  • NLP coaches respect the anonymousness and the confidentiality of the individuals who have consulted them or who are consulting them.

COMMITMENT

  • Upon starting a helping relationship with an individual, via a written or verbal coaching agreement, NLP coaches commit themselves to personally providing the said individual with the best possible services.
  • NLP coaches commit themselves to know themselves enough to be able to recognize their own limitations and those of the coaching process versus the specific difficulties of a client. In such cases, they must make sure to refer the said client to a relevant health specialist.
  • With this perspective in mind, NLP coaches must keep a network of professionals meeting high quality standards, to whom they can refer a client whenever required.
  • In their professional practice, NLP coaches commit to behaving in a way beyond reproach towards any client, physically, mentally, emotionally or sexually.
  • Respecting record management, NLP coaches commit to keeping records of their meetings with their clients. Such information must be preserved in a location that ensures the confidentiality thereof.
  • NLP coaches clearly and proudly represent the SICPNL.

INNOVATION

  • NLP coaches are open to every profession and every other type of professional practice, which enables them to remain in a dynamics allowing for creativity and evolution.
  • NLP coaches allow themselves to inform their peers of their discoveries in the application of NLP interventions, in order to further enhance the NLP coaching community.
