differences among the various forms of interventions
nlp Coaching – A tool of choice towards excellence
The increasing importance of coaching in terms of personal growth requires a good understanding of the differences among coaching and other guidance professions. Understanding these differences makes it easier to build upon the various specialists' complementarity: Consultants: They provide expertise related to a very specific field. Their role is to provide advice, recommendations and solutions. They have a specific work to do, with a specific timeframe. They are in control of the process... and of the result. However, consultants, like coaches, have an obligation of means, not an obligation of results. Therapists: Therapists generally work with persons who have dysfunctional symptoms or behavior patterns, in order to make them functional. Good, experienced psychotherapists are a person who have acquired sound knowledge of psychoemotional pathologies, which enables them to treat mental health problems (cases of paranoia, schizophrenia, severe depression, etc.) and chronic patterns such as inferiority, superiority, abandonment or failure complexes, as well as dependent behaviors (gambling, alcohol, sex, etc.) A therapist may have broadened his/her knowledge and training by acquiring skills in such fields as psychosomatic therapy or naturopathy, for instance. Therapists are skilled to guide individuals in a state of psychological and emotional suffering, through a grief or forgiveness process. This requires a great deal of sensitivity and specific form of training, different from the training offered to coaches, even though a coach can enable individuals in such situations to do a certain amount of work on those levels. In Quebec, psychotherapy became a regulated practice on June 18, 2009, via Act 21. To find out more, click here. Mentors: Mentors are recognized for their extensive experience, knowledge and wisdom. They infuse their mentorees, who resort to such a relationship in order to draw from the mentor's resources. Coaches: "The coach's position" is one that aims at mobilizing the coachee's internal resources and bringing the coachee to implement new strategies and behavioral patterns to achieve a specific objective. When well understood, coaching is a humble practice, that of guiding a normal person with normal problems in a simple, disciplined way, within an explicit intervention framework. Thus, normally, in order to add the term "Coaching" on their business cards, individuals must have been thoroughly trained as coaching practitioners, be aware of the differences among the various forms of helping relationships and, ideally, be supervised on a regular basis. The credibility of this profession depends on these factors. Besides, why not trust our clients to separate the wheat from the chaff...
