what is coaching?
nlp coaching – a tool of choice towards excellence

Coaching comes from both the world of organized sports and the brief therapy movement.

Sports have left their mark on coaching through such notions as specific objectives, preparation to a given event, supervised training, performance and efficiency in action, feedback to trigger improvements and to avoid repeating the same mistakes, pushing one's limits, in addition to the privileged coach-athlete relationship. A quality training coach is actually more of a potential awakener than an advisor or a confidant.

The brief therapy movement is comprised of several trends with a common focus on putting forward interventions towards the fastest possible resolution of existing problems: the Palo Alto School's Brief Strategic Therapy, Ericksonian Hypnosis, Solution-Oriented Approach, NLP, Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBT), and more recently, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing).

This movement, still quite productive nowadays, has brought a great deal of tools and model interventions that have allowed to respond to clients' needs differently. It has, among others, allowed to move the focus of the helping relationship from the past to the present and the future, to investigate the "how does it work?" component rather than the "why doesn't it work?" aspect, and to bring coaches to uprightnessly influence their client (as it is impossible not to influence) by using a rich, stimulating inductive language. Coaching relies directly on the elements of this new solution, strategy and resource oriented paradigm.

The coach, formerly a horse carriage, used to carry people from place to place. Here, the term gives the idea of coaching its full meaning: coaching is a process through which a coach guides an individual along the path leading from some present state to a desired state.
